Covering boundless musical terrain with no limits, composer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Joye is adding to his already impressive oeuvre with Emergence. The album invites listeners across open fields of sonic subtlety and sophistication for all moods and manners. With crystalline production and masterly arranging, live and virtual instrumentation are integrated flawlessly, creating such complementary relationships that perhaps a deconstruction of the meaning of “live” and “virtual” are in order, so that we might rediscover what is possible when not drifting down the long road of foolish dichotomies. The diverse pieces of Emergence employ a palette that ranges from gritty guitars to the comforting shelter of orchestral warmth, from lilting melody and hypnotic rhythm to passion-filled harmonic sequences. Whatever the situation in a television program, commercial, movie, or documentary—high, low, serious, sombre, humorous—there’s a perfectly fitting accompaniment here. Chris Joye reveals himself in Emergence as an artist whose powers are never sleeping.
